MISSION AND PURPOSE
The mission of Refuge Kids is to instill a curiosity, awe, and trust in Jesus Christ and his word. Many of the children we minister to are not yet redeemed or saved. Our purpose is to tell them who God is and what He has done so they can believe on and trust in Him. The goal of introducing children to Jesus is to see them place their faith in Him for their entire lives.
Spurgeon best sums it up when he says,
“I have sometimes noticed that, in addressing Sunday-school children, it is not uncommon to tell them that the way to be saved is to love Jesus, which is not true. The way to be saved for man, woman, or child is to trust Jesus for the pardon of sin, and then, trusting Jesus, love comes as a fruit. Love is by no means the root. Faith alone occupies that place.”
What does refuge kids do?
We are a ministry dedicated to serving families with children, primarily during the Sunday morning service. Volunteers spend time with the children and give them an opportunity for interactive play, Bible study, Scripture memorization, Catechism, and songs of truth. We use the curriculum Children Desiring God which surveys both the Old and New Testament. Our goal is to impart to children a vision of God, who He is, what He has done, and who we are in relation to Him, establishing with them with a foundation of doctrine and truth.
Partnership with parents
We believe that parents are the primary teachers of their children, and that it is our privilege to partner with them. (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) While the church classroom teaching is important in the life of children, parents have the most opportunity to bring truth to bear on the daily life experiences they share as a family. It is in these daily experiences that the Word can be tried and found true. Therefore, it is essential that the church equip and encourage parents in their God-given role to disciple their children. To that end, we provide Parent Resource Pages with each study to help inform parents of what is being taught in the classroom, so that they may follow-up as appropriate with their child throughout the week.
All of our volunteers are pursuing Jesus and the holiness that comes from knowing Him. They are also actively involved in the church and undergo a fingerprinting screening process.
