For as long as I have enjoyed music, it has alway been difficult to find great music that is edifying in nature. Great melody, rhythm, and edification in lyrical content have traditionally never been paired together well. Many songs will have great music and poor lyrical content or conversely will have great doctrine with lyrics that declare the glory of God and the work of the cross but will suffer greatly in musical quality.

In 2010, I seemed to stumble upon more quality music that is edifying in lyric and melody. Below I’ve listed my top 10 records of 2010 in no specific order. I realize that some of these records may be from years prior to 2010, but I may have only just discovered them in the past year.

Ascend the Hill – Hymns
It is only appropriate to find quality lyrics based in the old hymns. Ascend the Hill covers them well in their respective style.

Proto Evangelion – Dimly Lit
Again, another compilation of hymns, but done in a much more simple way. A wide variety of instruments and vocals.

Reality LA – Volume 2
The follow up to Volume 1, this new record to me seems more congregational in nature. I find it easier to sing along to this straightforward record.

Thad Cockrell – To Be Loved
Thad has been a more recent discovery, the way that he writes his verses and then reverses his chord progression for the bridge of the song is brilliant.

The Welcome Wagon – Welcome to the Welcome Wagon
Features a husband and wife team that is arranged and produced by Sufjan Stevens.

Page CXVI – Hymns I
This is the first of three hymn records produced by Page CXVI, I don’t own the other 2 so I can’t authoritatively say it is the best one of the three… but it is.

Phillip Glass – Glass: Violin Concerto No.2 “The American Four Seasons”
Yes, a concerto made the list… this record is dynamic in nature and when I give it a listen, I find myself meditating on the cross more and more often.

Carney – Mr. Green Volume I
Carney is a good rock album in the nature of the 60′s/70′s. The style on the songs can be quite diverse, but give “Testify” a listen both lyrically and musically to understand what I mean. Carney will rock you.

Sons and Daughters
They don’t even have a record out yet, but when it comes out I’m betting it will be good. David and Leslie of Sons and Daughters, are very reminiscent of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of The Swell Season.

Owl City – In Christ Alone
Just a song, not an album, but Owl City does it so well. I am not an Owl City fan by any means, but the production on this homemade cover of Stuart Townsend’s “In Christ Alone” is awesome.

We had a huge crack in the radiator and had a mobile repair unit come out and install
a new one on the spot. It was both a bummer, but since the Lord put us in this spot, we figured that the repair guy
needed to hear the gospel. We had great conversation with him. Please pray for Scott (the repairman).

Since we finished getting the car repaired at 10:30 PM and we left that morning at 5 AM, and still had 5 hours of driving ahead of us,
we called up Ian Sterk, who is going to Simpson College in Redding. He graciously let us stay with him and his roommates. We also were
able to take advantage of the “TasteeFare” Waffle Maker. I had quite a few and Brian did as well. It was great to see the body of Christ in action as they served us.

The trip was great and I’m sure in the coming weeks, a lot of the content will be reflection of the things that Holy Spirit ministered to us at the conference.
